Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 16.3.2022

Avalanche Bulletin 48, Wednesday 16.3.2022 at 8:00 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is 1st degree on the five-level European scale. Above 1800 meters, there is 2nd degree avalanche danger on all slopes.

Fairly high temperatures and SW wind have softened and moistened the snowpack even in the high mountains over the last two days. The snowpack is warming throughout its depth. Overnight, the snow surface at around 1600 meters froze and a thin crust formed. The specific density of the snow is also increasing, making the snowpack more unstable. Some small wet loose snow avalanches have spontaneously released on sun-exposed slopes.

Today in the mountains above Tržič it will be cloudy. In the afternoon, the sun may shine briefly. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around +6°C, with weak to moderate S wind. At 2000 meters around +2°C, with NW wind up to 25 km/h. Tomorrow there will be more sun and it will cool slightly.

The snowpack will be somewhat more unstable today on slopes with sufficient steepness, as we expect spontaneous releases of wet loose snow avalanches and slab avalanches on grass-covered slopes in the high mountains due to snowpack warming and moisture penetration into the snowpack. Small to medium-sized avalanches are expected. Be cautious in these areas, especially when crossing snow-covered slopes and staying below them. Tomorrow it will be cooler and the snowpack will stabilize somewhat on shaded slopes. There will be more sun, so the danger of spontaneous release will mainly be on sun-exposed slopes.
