Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 17.12.2021

17.12.2021
Avalanche Bulletin 10, Friday 17.12.2021 at 5:30 a.m. for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.

General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1200 meters is degree 2 on the five-degree European scale, lower it is degree 1.

Positive temperatures in recent days contributed to faster settling and transformation of the snowpack. Somewhat slower transformation occurred on shady slopes, especially in gullies and hollows of the high mountains. There the snow is still dry. In the mid-mountains, during the day the sun and positive temperatures melted the snow, but in the evening the snow surface froze. A crust formed, which held human weight in places, elsewhere it broke through. On sunny slopes, medium to large ground slab avalanches released. Ridges and certain slopes are partly wind-scoured to hard or bare ground.

Today it will be clear in the Tržič mountains. At 1500 meters around +2°C, moderate north wind up to 30 km/h. At 2000 meters around -1°C, wind from the north up to 50 km/h. Tomorrow clear. Temperatures similar to today. On Sunday clear, it will warm up.

The snow will transform and settle in the coming days. Settling will be more pronounced on sunny slopes in the mid-mountains. Overall, the snowpack is well bonded. It is different on parts of shady slopes, where the snow will remain dry, especially in gullies and hollows of the high mountains. There, with greater additional load, slab avalanches can still be triggered. Solar radiation will again affect sunny slopes. On slopes with grassy ground or covered with leaves, ground slab avalanches will still release. Avoid walking under these slopes!!! In the afternoon, the snow will freeze. Use equipment suitable for walking in such conditions!!!
