Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 18.12.2022
19.12.2022
General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1700 m is 3rd degree on the five-level European scale. Below 1700 m it is 1st degree
Above 1900 m, about 30 cm of snow fell during the last snowfall. The snowfall was accompanied by a fairly strong SW wind in the first part, which transported snow into leeward positions. Later the wind changed direction and blew from the north. It was transporting snow and building wind slabs, cornices and slabs. Smaller to medium dry snow avalanches released spontaneously from under the highest peaks. Areas with wind-blown snow are still present. On these parts the snow is dry and light. Weak layers are still present in the depth.
Below 1800 m there is slightly less snow. Below this altitude, precipitation changed from rain to snow and the new snow bonded somewhat better with the old snow surface. In the depth the snow is still somewhat moist, but quite compact and stable. Locally there can also be wind slabs and slabs. The temperature in the depth of the snow cover is slowly dropping. The layers will bond well together.
Today the air temperature at 1500 m at midday will be around -3°C, with weak wind blowing. At 2000 m the temperature will also be around -3°C. Weak NW wind blowing.
Tomorrow warmer air will start flowing in. On Tuesday at 1500 m midday around +5°C. At 2000 m around +7°C.
Today and tomorrow the snowpack will transform. The temperature of the old snowpack is slowly dropping. Below 1700 m the layers in the old snowpack will bond well.
Higher, above 1700 m the transformation will be somewhat slower, as temperatures were lower. Weak layers still exist in the old snow, which can separate under additional load. Under ridges and in narrow gullies on northern aspects there are locally areas with wind-blown snow. On these parts caution is required, as a slab snow avalanche can be triggered with minor additional load. From Tuesday onwards avalanche conditions will change due to the inflow of warm air to higher elevations.
