The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1400 meters is level 3, below 1400 meters level 2 on the five-level European scale. In the high mountains, above 1800 meters, the local avalanche danger can be higher.
In the last few days, 25 to 50 cm of snow has fallen in the high mountains. Snowfall was accompanied by variable winds of changing directions, which transported snow and formed new wind slabs, dunes, and cornices. Under ridges, in narrow couloirs and depressions of the highest peaks, there is a huge amount of wind-drifted snow on all aspects. On these parts, the snowpack is very unstable. The old snowpack contains numerous hidden critical layers. Yesterday, spontaneous releases of poorly bonded wind-drifted snow avalanches occurred, and over the debris another 10 to 15 cm of snow fell last night.
Even in the mid-mountains, snow fell and wind blew, transporting snow and forming new dunes.
It will cool down. Today at noon at 1500 meters around -7°C. South wind with gusts to 30 km/h. At 2000 meters around -10°C, stronger south wind with gusts to 50 km/h. Snowfall will cease in the afternoon. Today during the day up to 15 cm of dry snow will fall in the high mountains. Tomorrow, Friday morning, snow will start drifting in again, stopping by midday. It will cool even more. Temperature at 1500 meters around -10°C, south wind to 30 km/h. At 2000 meters air temperature around -12°C, strong south wind to 80 km/h.
The reinforced north wind blowing in the coming days will transport snow and build new wind slab areas!!!
In the coming days, conditions in the high mountains will be very demanding. Snow will transform and settle very slowly due to low temperatures. North wind will additionally transport snow and build new avalanche problems on leeward slopes. GREAT caution is required when transitioning from shallow to deep snow. Wind slab areas will be very difficult to recognize as they are covered with new snow. On these parts, an avalanche can be triggered with very small additional stress. The snowpack is generally very unstable!
Additional experience in local avalanche danger assessment will be needed in the coming days to identify unstable areas!!!
Locally, above 1800 meters, avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič can be HIGHER!
