Avalanche bulletin 40, Saturday 19.2.2022 at 6:00 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.
General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1500 meters is 3rd degree on the five-level European scale. Below 1500 meters it is 2nd degree, below 1200 meters 1st degree.
Yesterday's sun and fairly high air humidity caused hoar formation and moistened the snowpack.
On sun-exposed slopes or areas exposed to the sun, there was heavy hoar formation. The snowpack was heavily loaded, so spontaneous small to medium full-depth snow avalanches occurred. On these parts, the snow transformed, melted, and settled faster.
On shaded slopes, due to high air humidity and higher air temperature, the snowpack was moist up to an altitude of about 1800 meters. Higher up, the snow remained dry. On slopes and under high mountain ridges, there is still wind-drifted snow that is poorly bonded to the old snow base. The top layer of the new snowpack spontaneously released from sufficiently steep slopes.
The snow froze overnight above sea level approximately 1700 meters, lower it will remain moist.
Today in the Tržič high mountains it will be cloudy and foggy. Precipitations will start already in the morning. The snow line will initially be around 1400 meters at the start of precipitations, but in the afternoon it will begin to descend. In the morning a moderate SW wind will blow, which will somewhat weaken in the afternoon. Air temperature today at 1500 meters will be around 0°C, at 2000 meters around -2°C. Today during the day, 10 to 15 cm of new snow may fall above 1500 meters. In the evening, precipitations will cease. Tomorrow it will be cloudy.
Today's new snow will additionally load the old snowpack. Below about 1600 meters, the new snow will bond better with the old moist snow base, as wet snow or rain will fall at the beginning of precipitations. Higher in the high mountains, temperatures will be lower and dry snow will fall.
The new snow will additionally load the old snowpack or the top layer, so we expect spontaneous releases from sufficiently steep slopes. In the high mountains, SW to W wind will transport snow in the morning, northerly in the afternoon. New avalanche problems will form (slabs, wind slabs, soft slabs).
Today and tomorrow we advise against visiting the high mountains. We expect spontaneous snow avalanche releases. Staying and walking under slopes with frequent avalanches can be dangerous. Avoid these slopes! Even tomorrow, the avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič above 1500 meters will be 3rd degree!
