Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 21.1.2023

General avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area above 1400 m is 3rd degree, below 1400 m 2nd degree on the five-level European scale. In the high mountains, above 1800 m, the local avalanche danger can be higher.

Conditions have changed somewhat in the past days. Snowfall and wind have again built wind slabs in both high and mid-mountains. Hidden critical layers in the snowpack can fail with additional minor loading. Smaller to medium dry loose snow avalanches have released spontaneously from all slopes regardless of aspect.
Snowpack temperature at depth is slowly dropping. Layers are very poorly bonded. Strong wind yesterday built additional critical layers and other avalanche problems. There are huge amounts of soft wind slabs and cornices. Conditions in the high mountains were demanding and dangerous!

Today, very strong north wind with gusts up to 100 km/h will blow in the high mountains. Strong northerly wind also in mid-mountains. It will be cold. At 1500 m air temperature around -8°C, at 2000 m around -12°C. Strong north wind will transport large amounts of snow and build new avalanche problems! Tomorrow, Sunday, wind will weaken somewhat but still transport dry snow in smaller quantities. Due to somewhat weaker wind, wind chill will be less than on Saturday, but still cold. On Monday, new deterioration expected. Wind will strengthen and it will snow.

Today strong north wind will transport huge amounts of dry snow and build avalanche problems especially on south-facing slopes. Snow will also accumulate under rocks and in narrow couloirs. Already unstable and unpredictable conditions will worsen further.
On wind-loaded snow areas, avalanche can be triggered with very small additional load! There will be many such areas. Great caution needed on transitions from hard snow surface to soft. Visibility will also be greatly reduced due to wind. Expect spontaneous release of dry loose snow avalanches from all sufficiently steep slopes! Tomorrow, Sunday, conditions similar!
In high mountains, above 1800 m, local higher avalanche danger possible!
Conditions in high mountains will be VERY DEMANDING AND DANGEROUS! Avoid walking under rocks and lee steep slopes also in mid-mountains!
For the coming days we advise against visiting high mountains!
