Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 22.3.2023

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is above 1700 m 2nd degree on the five-level European scale. Below 1700 m it is 1st degree.

The snowpack has hardened overnight in the last two days, also surface frozen, but during the day heavily wetted on sun-exposed slopes. It has wetted on shaded slopes too, but much less. Small glide or slab avalanches and wet cohesive snow avalanches have released spontaneously, even on north-facing slopes midday. Snow has also been melting, faster at lower elevations. Below 1300 m there is very little snow, in places none anymore.

Tomorrow, on Wednesday, there will be lots of sun. Temperatures will be high even in the mid-mountains and high mountains. Air temperature at 1500 m will be around +8°C midday, at 2000 m around +4°C. Weak S to SW wind will blow. On Thursday it will be somewhat warmer. Air temperature at 1500 m around +11°C, at 2000 m around +6°C. Moderate westerly wind will blow.

Already tonight the snow will not freeze up to the high mountains and will remain moist. Tomorrow, on Wednesday, the atmosphere will warm up. The snowpack will be wet on all slopes, somewhat more on sun-exposed slopes, where solar radiation will strongly affect the snow. We expect that tomorrow and especially on Thursday, when it will be somewhat warmer, wet cohesive snow avalanches and slab avalanches will release spontaneously. We expect more of them on sun-exposed slopes above 1700 m. Lower down there is somewhat less snow, but snow avalanches may reach lower elevations. Do not linger under slopes with frequent avalanches or cross them! Due to the warm weather, wet cohesive snow avalanches will also release spontaneously on shaded slopes. The snow will remain wet even in the night to Thursday. In shady locations in the high mountains, weak layers still persist in the snowpack. There is also a high probability of cornice collapse! Be careful!
Avalanche danger will thus remain until Friday above 1700 m at 2nd degree. On Thursday locally, where there is more snow on sun-exposed slopes in the high mountains, CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree avalanche danger.
