Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 23.1.2023

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1500 meters is HIGH, 4th degree, and below 1500 meters 3rd degree on the five-level European scale.

Due to low temperatures and wind, the transformation of the snowpack was slower. Strong wind has been transporting snow and forming wind slabs, dunes, and cornices in the past days. Areas with drifted snow exist on all slopes. Smaller to medium dry loose snow avalanches have released spontaneously, regardless of slope aspect. Snow conditions in the high mountains have been demanding and dangerous.

Today, very strong S to NE wind with gusts up to 80 km/h will blow in the high mountains. Strong wind will also occur in the mid-mountains below the Karawanks. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -3°C at midday. It will snow. Visibility will be very poor due to the wind. Up to 30 to 50 cm of dry snow may fall by evening. Snow will stop overnight into Tuesday and the wind will subside. Tomorrow it will be cloudy.

Avalanche conditions are deteriorating hour by hour due to new snow and very strong wind.
Today, 25 to 40 cm of snow will fall above 1500 meters. The already unstable snowpack will worsen further. There will be numerous wind slabs, almost impossible to identify due to poor visibility and new snow. Avalanche danger will increase during the morning and already be HIGH, 4th degree above 1500 meters by midday on the five-level European scale. Medium to large dry loose snow avalanches are expected to release spontaneously from all sufficiently steep slopes above 1000 meters. Avalanches may reach the bottoms of mountain valleys, so walking even in valleys in areas prone to frequent avalanches above 1000 meters will be very dangerous and unpredictable.
Due to the very strong northerly wind, avoid walking in forests as windthrow may occur!

Conditions in the high and mid-mountains will be VERY DEMANDING AND DANGEROUS!
We advise against visiting the mountains in the coming days!
