Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 24.1.2023

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1500 meters is HIGH, 4th degree, below 1500 meters 3rd degree on the five-level European scale.

Yesterday during the day, 30 to 60 cm of snow fell in the mid-mountain and high-mountain areas. Strong NE wind transported the snow and built new avalanche problems. The new snow bonded very poorly with the old snow surface. Critical layers are present in both the old and new snowpack. Avalanches of dry loose snow spontaneously released from sufficiently steep slopes. In some areas, the wind scoured snow down to the hard base, elsewhere it built wind slabs and huge wind slab areas. There is a lot of wind-drifted snow on southern slopes below ridges, where soft slabs formed. Wind-drifted snow is also in bowls and narrow gullies.

Today during the day it will snow lightly, but the amount of snow will not change the snow and avalanche conditions. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -3°C at midday today, moderate NE wind up to 30 km/h will blow. Higher up, at 2000 meters, NE to W wind up to 30 km/h will blow, strengthening slightly in the afternoon.

New snow and wind have further deteriorated the avalanche and snow conditions, which will remain very demanding and dangerous today as well. There are huge wind slab areas on all slopes, especially southern ones, as the wind deposited snow there. On these areas, an avalanche can be triggered with very small additional load. Elsewhere, wind slab areas are very hard to recognize, so we advise not to go to the mountains in the coming days. We expect spontaneous avalanches to release today on all sufficiently steep slopes, even below 1500 meters. Avoid walking in narrow valleys and areas where avalanches are common. In the coming days, the snowpack will transform very slowly due to lower temperatures. Critical or weak layers will remain in the snowpack. We expect the avalanche danger to decrease only on Wednesday, but locally in the high mountains it may still remain HIGH.
Conditions in the high mountains and mid-mountains will be VERY DEMANDING AND DANGEROUS today and tomorrow!
We advise against visiting the mountains in the coming days!
