Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 24.12.2022

General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1800 m is 2nd degree on the five-degree European scale. Below 1800 m it is 1st degree

In the past two days, due to warm weather and solar radiation, the snow cover has settled and also melted. On sun-exposed slopes, some small to medium snow avalanches have released. Some slab avalanches on steep grassy slopes were also observed. Cracks in the snow cover are visible on these parts. In the high mountains, surface snow froze at night, but softened during the day, becoming very wet in places. On shaded sides of the high mountains above 1800 m, weak layers persist in the old snowpack.
Lower, below about 1800 m, the layers in the snow cover are relatively well bonded. Snowpack depth also decreases with elevation. Below 1000 m there is almost no snow left.

Tomorrow, air temperature at 1500 m will be around +5°C, with light westerly wind. At 2000 m around +4°C, westerly wind up to 30 km/h. On Monday it will cool slightly but temperatures will remain above freezing. Westerly wind will strengthen somewhat in the high mountains.

Snow will continue settling and melting over the next two days. Snowpack layers will bond even better due to temperature fluctuations. During the day snow will become wet, at night in high mountains surface freeze will occur forming a crust. Icy surfaces will form in places.
Due to warm weather, avalanche release remains possible on all slopes in coming days. Higher probability on sun-exposed slopes, especially grassy ones with sufficient steepness. Slab avalanches will also occur there. Do not linger below these slopes.
