Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 24.2.2023

24.02.2023
General avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area will be level 2 on the five-level European scale from Saturday afternoon onwards. Below 1400 meters, it will be level 1.

In the past week, the snow cover has transformed and consolidated well due to daily temperature fluctuations. Numerous ground or wet snow slab avalanches occurred, mainly on sun-exposed slopes. Some smaller avalanches also occurred on shaded or northern slopes of mid-mountain and high-mountain areas. Cornices also collapsed. Due to slightly higher air humidity and higher temperatures, snow on shaded slopes of mid-mountain was moist. Wind-packed or crusty areas have bonded well with the old snow cover.
During the night, a crust formed, but not everywhere. Ridges are mostly icy.

Tomorrow, Saturday, it will be partly cloudy in the morning. The sun may shine briefly. In the afternoon, it will become cloudy. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around +1°C midday, at 2000 meters around -3°C. Snow level initially around 1400 meters. On Sunday night, it will cool significantly and precipitation will intensify. Strong easterly wind will blow. Above 1500 meters, 10 to 20 cm of snow will fall. On Sunday, cold and windy. Air temperature at 1500 meters around -8°C, at 2000 meters around -12°C. NW wind up to 50 km/h.

Until tomorrow afternoon, avalanche and snow conditions will not change significantly. Due to rain precipitation, snow in mid-mountain will be heavily soaked. Individual wet snow avalanches on all slopes not excluded. On Sunday night, some snow will fall. In mid-mountain, snow will fall on moist snow surface and bond relatively well. In high-mountain, it will fall partly on frozen surface, where it won't bond. Snowfall accompanied by strong easterly wind, which will transport snow and build new wind slabs. Lots of drifted snow in narrow couloirs. On areas with wind-packed snow, you may trigger dry unbonded snow avalanche with small additional load. Wide slopes and ridges will be wind-scoured to old snow surface or bare ground.
