Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 24.4.2023

24.04.2023
General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1800 m is CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree on the five-level European scale. Below 1800 m it will be MODERATE, 2nd degree.

The snowpack became heavily soaked and melted during the day, and in the high mountains it also surface-frozen overnight. The snowpack somewhat consolidated in the mid-mountains too, but quickly softened or slushed in the morning. Wet snow avalanches spontaneously released on all slopes. Avalanche sizes varied from small to medium-large. Some avalanches reached their maximum runouts.
On sun-exposed slopes, snow melted quickly due to strong solar radiation and elevated air temperatures. Below 1250 m there is still very little or almost no snow.

Today it will be cloudy. Some precipitation can be expected in the morning. The snow line will be around 1600 to 1700 m today. Air temperature at 1500 m at midday around +3°C, at 2000 m around +0°C. At midday, a south wind with gusts up to 40 km/h will blow in the high mountains. Tomorrow, Tuesday, it will also be cloudy with precipitation in the afternoon. The snow line will be around 1500 to 1600 m. Air temperature at 1500 m around +3°C, at 2000 m around -1°C. North winds will blow in the afternoon.

The snowpack will also be wet during the day up to about 1800 m in the coming days. Some precipitation is expected. In the high mountains above 2000 m, the wind will also transport new snow to lee slopes (S, SW, W sides) and build snow deposits. Caution is needed in these areas. Wind-blown snow will also be under northern faces and in narrow couloirs on lee sides. Spontaneous avalanches will release from sufficiently steep slopes (>35°) in the high mountains. Avalanche size will depend on the amount of precipitation. Below 1600 m, precipitation will additionally soak the snow. Spontaneous individual glide avalanches on grassy slopes are also expected.
Avalanche danger will thus be today and tomorrow above 1800 m 3rd degree, below 1800 m 1st degree. Snow and avalanche conditions in the high mountains are still demanding. They will remain demanding in the coming days when some new snow is expected. Do not linger under slopes with frequent avalanches.
