The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1400 meters is CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree, and below 1400 meters it is 2nd degree on the five-level European scale.
The NE wind that blew during last night continues to transport snow in the high mountains and build new wind slab areas. Some precipitation fell, but this snow will not significantly affect avalanche conditions. Ridges are mostly wind-scoured to hard base, and under the ridges on all aspects there are areas with wind-deposited unstable snow. On these parts, you can trigger a wind slab avalanche with just a small additional load.
On sufficiently steep south/sunny slopes above 1000 meters, dry bonded, unbonded snow slab avalanches and ground avalanches have been released.
Due to low air temperatures, the snowpack has transformed very slowly, especially in the high mountains. There are numerous weak layers in both old and new snowpack that fail under the weight of one person.
Some precipitation fell last night, but the amounts are small and will not affect snow and avalanche conditions. The NE wind gusting up to 35 km/h has again transported snow and built avalanche problems.
Today at 1500 meters, midday air temperature will be around -10°C, with NE winds up to 40 km/h. At 2000 meters, it will be around -13°C, with NE winds gusting up to 50 km/h. Tomorrow and Sunday, temperatures in the high mountains will be similar. The wind will calm slightly on Sunday.
Due to low air temperatures, avalanche conditions in the high mountains and mid-mountains will not change much. In the high mountains, they will remain very demanding and unpredictable. The NE wind blowing today and tomorrow will continue to transport snow and deposit it in leeward areas. There is a lot of wind-deposited snow under ridges, in bowls and gullies on all aspects, so be careful as it is very difficult to recognize wind slab areas. The wind transporting snow repeatedly covers such areas and builds new ones!
Weak layers in the snowpack will persist through the weekend, so be cautious as you can disrupt the snowpack equilibrium with the additional load of just one person.
Visiting the high mountains in the coming days will be demanding and unpredictable. Choose objectives suitable for such conditions and do not expose yourself!
