Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 27.2.2023
28.02.2023
General avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area is level 2 on the five-level European scale. Below 1400 meters it will be level 1. Locally above 1900 meters level 3 avalanche danger!
At 1500 meters, up to 30 cm of dry snow has fallen in the last two days. At the start of snowfall, snow fell on moist old snow base up to about 1600 meters. Higher in the high mountains, above 1600 meters, it fell on a thin frozen layer. This part is very poorly bonded. Strong westerly wind and later NE winds transported snow into leeward positions and built new avalanche problems. There are many slab areas that are unstable above 1700 meters. Lots of wind-packed snow also in narrow couloirs. Summits and ridges are mostly scoured to old snow or ice base. Wide slopes are also scoured to hard or icy base.
The snowpack was moist throughout its depth up to about 1600 meters before cooling. NE wind and lower air temperatures have started cooling it, but it still remains moist deep enough.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, mostly cloudy and wind will calm somewhat. Air temperature at 1500 meters around -8°C, at 2000 meters around -9°C. Wednesday also cloudy weather. Light snow possible in the evening. Easterly wind will strengthen somewhat. Air temperature at 1500 meters around -3°C, at 2000 meters around -5°C. Thursday cloudy. Gradually warmer.
Until Wednesday evening, avalanche and snow conditions will not change much. Wind that blew during snowfall built wind slabs and slabs. More wind slab on slopes from SE to W, but elsewhere also slab areas that can be quite large. In high mountains on these parts, new snow is poorly bonded to old frozen surface and here you can trigger a snow avalanche with additional minor load. Wednesday evening expect some precipitation accompanied by wind. It will again build new slab areas, but not as large as this time, since much less precipitation.
In mid-mountains, new snow has mostly bonded well to old moist snow base.
Gradually, due to somewhat higher temperatures, avalanche danger will decrease.
