Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 29.12.2022

29.12.2022
General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is level 1 on the five-level European scale.

Lower air temperatures have further bonded the layers in the snowpack. The snowpack is generally compact and mostly stabilized. Yesterday, up to 2 cm of snow fell above 1400 meters. Weak wind did not significantly affect the new snow nor transport it in larger quantities. Smaller deposits of new snow are possible under ridges in shaded locations. Overnight, snow surfaces froze. Somewhere a thicker crust formed, elsewhere a thinner one. On southern slopes, small cracks appeared yesterday morning due to solar radiation on the slopes; these will enlarge in the coming days and lead to snow creep.

Today it will be partly clear in the morning, with increasing cloudiness in the afternoon. At 1500 meters, midday air temperature around +2°C, S to SW wind up to 30 km/h. At 2000 meters, midday around -1°C, SW to W wind up to 50 km/h. Overnight to Friday, warming begins. Tomorrow morning, rain in mid-mountains, snow higher up. Snow line around 1400 meters. Expect up to 5 cm of snow, which will not persist long. Saturday even warmer. At 1500 meters around +7°C. Snow line at 3000 meters.

Today air temperatures remain low, so no significant changes in the snowpack expected. Snowpack stable and compact today. Tomorrow daytime, the atmosphere will warm in the high mountains too, strongly influencing the snowpack in coming days. Tomorrow's precipitation will additionally load and soften the snowpack. On sufficiently steep southern slopes with grassy underlay, small to medium ground avalanches will begin to occur. Spontaneous avalanche release possible on other slopes with sufficient incline. There will be level 2 avalanche danger, persisting until Sunday, so do not linger below them or cross such slopes. Due to melting snow and ice in high mountain walls and elsewhere, rockfalls are not excluded.
May the last night of this year be peaceful and safe. Happy New Year 2023 from the members of the Institute for Avalanche Protection!
