Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 29.3.2023

29.03.2023
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič will be CONSIDERABLE above 1700 meters, level 3 on the five-level European scale. Below 1700 meters it is level 1.

Strong northerly wind that blew today and yesterday transported snow in large quantities above 1400 meters and built new windslabs and snowdrifts. On all slopes, regardless of aspect, dry loose snow avalanches released spontaneously. Snowpack and avalanche conditions are currently unpredictable. The snowpack has not transformed due to low humidity, low temperatures, and northerly wind that is still transporting snow but in smaller quantities. Critical layers have formed between the old and new wind-packed snowpack that do not hold human weight! Here the snowpack is very unstable. Weak layers are also present in the old snowpack, which is moist at depth.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, it will be cloudy in the morning. It will partly clear in the forenoon. From tonight into Wednesday, SW wind will start blowing and it will warm up. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around +0°C midday, at 2000 meters around -2°C. Above 2000 meters, moderate W to NW wind will blow. On Thursday it will be even warmer. The 0°C isotherm will be above 2800 meters. Air temperature at 1500 meters around +5°C, at 2000 meters around +3°C. SW wind up to 40 km/h will blow. On Friday it will be cloudy with precipitation. It will be slightly warmer. SW wind with gusts up to 50 km/h will blow.

The snowpack will remain dry and loose above 1500 meters until tomorrow midday on Wednesday. The atmosphere will start gradually warming already tonight and SW wind will blow, which will affect the snowpack surface and its transformation. Air humidity will also increase. In mid-mountain areas, snow will transform faster than in high mountains. In high mountains, above approximately 1700 meters, snow on shady aspects will remain dry until Wednesday evening, so above 1700 meters tomorrow there will still be CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič. There is a lot of wind-drifted snow or many windslab areas on all slopes and narrow gullies, regardless of aspect. On these parts, the snowpack is very unstable and unpredictable and you can trigger an avalanche with minimal additional load!!! Some slopes and ridges are wind-scoured to old or bare ground.
In the night to Thursday, the snowpack will soften and start settling even in high mountains. Lower in mid-mountains, below 1500 meters, it will also melt. Snow will start transforming and stabilizing faster. We do not rule out individual wet cohesive snow avalanches from sufficiently steep slopes, possibly individual glide avalanches, regardless of aspect, so be careful when traveling under slopes with frequent avalanches!!! On Thursday, above 1700 meters it will be level 2 avalanche danger, lower level 1.
Regardless of MODERATE avalanche danger, even at this level individual avalanches are possible, so choose objectives suitable for current local conditions. Conditions differ by slope aspect and elevation, as wind has loaded snow on all aspects! Currently, it is also very difficult to recognize windslab areas.
