Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 30.1.2023

General avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area above 1500 m is CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree, below 1500 m 2nd degree on the five-level European scale.
Wind from NE in recent days has transported dry snow and built new wind slab areas. Low air temperatures have slowed the transformation of the snowpack. Wind-blown snow is very poorly bonded to the old snow surface or older snow deposits. There were not many spontaneous avalanches in the high mountains and there are still many areas with wind-blown snow that are unstable. Ridges and summits are wind-scoured to the hard snow base. Wind slabs have formed on ridges, which are already very large in places.
Even in the mid-mountains, snow remained dry in recent days.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, air temperature at 1500 m at midday will be around -3°C, in the morning S to NW wind with gusts up to 40 km/h. At 2000 m around -5°C, NW wind up to 50 km/h. On Wednesday it will warm up slightly. Zero isotherm height will be around 1500 m. Partly cloudy weather will prevail. Air humidity will be relatively low. On Thursday temperatures will be similar with somewhat more cloudiness.
In the high mountains on shady sides, snow will remain dry in the coming days and transform very slowly. Weak layers will remain in the snowpack. On these parts, an avalanche can be triggered with very little additional stress. Great caution when going from hard base into deep snow. There are huge areas with wind-blown snow and these areas will remain unstable. Tomorrow, Tuesday, wind will still transport snow and build new wind slab areas.
Due to solar radiation and slightly higher temperatures, wet cohesive snow slab avalanches or ground avalanches may spontaneously release on sunny slopes, especially where there is grassy terrain. Avoid walking under these slopes!
Avalanche danger will therefore increase somewhat at midday. Snow in the mid-mountains and on sunny sides will freeze at night and a crust will form. On these parts it will transform faster and be more stable.
Conditions in the high mountains are still demanding, so we warn you to be careful!
