Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 3.1.2023

The general avalanche risk in the Municipality of Tržič area is level 1 on the five-level European scale.

In the past few days, snow has heavily settled and also melted during the day up to an altitude of about 1400 meters. The snow has also compacted. Higher up, due to lower nighttime temperatures, it has also surface-frozen and a crust has formed, which held human weight in places, but not elsewhere. In depth, the snowpack is still moist. Below 1200 meters, there is almost no snow left.

Today it will be cloudy and foggy. In the afternoon, some precipitation can be expected, but not much. At 1500 meters at midday around 2°C, a light wind will blow. At 2000 meters it will be around 0°C. Tomorrow morning partly clear. Daytime temperatures will be slightly higher than today, but it will cool at night. On Thursday it will warm up.

Today and tomorrow, the snowpack will be somewhat harder and surface-frozen due to lower temperatures. During the day it will settle and also melt lower in the mid-mountains. In the high mountains, above 1800 meters, weak layers between old and new snow are still locally present, which can release sliding surfaces with greater additional load. On sufficiently steep sun-facing slopes where cracks are visible, a small avalanche can trigger spontaneously during the day. On Thursday it will warm up slightly, which will change the avalanche risk, but only in the high mountains. Below 1200 meters there is almost no snow left.
