Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 3.12.2021

Avalanche bulletin 4 for 3.12.2021 at 7:30 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.

General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is 3 on the five-level European scale. Above 1700 m a.s.l., it can locally be 4!

Over yesterday and last night, up to 40 cm of snow fell above 1500 m. Snowfall was accompanied by a north wind up to 30 km/h, which also changed direction during snowfall, especially in the Zelenica valley. Drifted snow is on all aspects. In the high mountains, the wind influenced the snow cover even more, as dry snow fell from the start of snowfall, which it transported and built new wind slabs, cornices, and ridges. Lower down, below about 1300 m, wet snow began to fall, which strongly affected the old snow cover. Especially on grassy slopes with sufficient steepness, medium to large slab avalanches were released. Similarly, medium to large avalanches spontaneously released on north aspects. A huge amount of drifted snow is in bowls and saddles.

Today it will be cold in the Tržič mountains. At 1500 m, around -8°C during the day, north winds up to 20 km/h. At 2000 m, around -10°C, north wind up to 30 km/h. In the afternoon, partly clearing. Tomorrow cloudy. Temperatures slightly higher, but still cold. Tomorrow west winds, which will affect the snow cover. On Sunday, new precipitation possible.

Due to low temperatures, snow metamorphism has slowed. Snow is light and very dry. Current surface snow temperature is -8°C and falling. Layers in the snow are very poorly bonded. The wind blowing today and tomorrow will continue to transport snow and build new cornices, wind slabs, and ridges. On areas with drifted snow, a wind slab avalanche can already be triggered with minor additional stress. On steeper slopes in the mid-mountains and high mountains, small dry loose snow avalanches can release spontaneously. Avalanche danger will not change today and tomorrow due to low temperatures and wind.
Today and tomorrow we advise against visiting the high mountains.
