Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 31.3.2023

31.03.2023
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič will be MODERATE above 1800 meters, 2nd degree on the five-degree European scale. Below 1800 meters it is 1st degree.

Due to wind in the past days, certain slopes are wind-scoured to hard base, in places even to bare ground. Ridges are also heavily wind-scoured. There is a lot of wind-drifted snow in narrow gullies and depressions. In places, a crust has formed that does not support human weight. Snow has softened due to slightly higher temperatures, SW wind, and higher air humidity up to an altitude of about 2000 meters. Weak layers still persist in the snowpack that could fail under additional heavy load.
Below 1300 meters there is little or no snow left, especially on slopes.

Today it will be cloudy with precipitation and foggy. Air humidity will be high, affecting the snowpack. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around +5°C, at 2000 meters around 0°C. A strengthening to strong SW wind will blow. Tomorrow, Saturday, it will be cloudy. In the afternoon, some showers and thunderstorms may occur. Air temperature at 1500 meters around +4°C, at 2000 meters around -1°C. W wind up to 20 km/h. Sunday will also be cloudy with occasional precipitation. In the high mountains it will cool slightly.

Snow is and will be wet up to an altitude of approximately 1900 meters. The snowpack will settle. On all sufficiently steep slopes (>35°), where there is drifted snow, spontaneous avalanches of wet cohesive snow are possible, on grassy slopes also gliding or ground avalanches. Do not go under these slopes prone to frequent avalanches. Tomorrow and Sunday morning above approximately 1600 meters the snowpack may be surface-frozen, but will soon soften.
Due to precipitation in the next two days in the form of rain up to approximately 1700 meters, rain will further load the snowpack, especially where snow is drifted and where larger amounts of snow are present, spontaneous avalanching may occur. Higher, above approximately 1700 meters, some snow may fall.
Lower in the foothills there is little snow.
Avalanche danger will remain 2nd degree above 1800 meters until Monday morning, lower 1st degree.
