Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 3.3.2023

3.03.2023
The general avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area is level 2 on the five-level European scale. Below 1600 meters, it will be level 1. On Saturday, 4.3.2023, on sun-exposed slopes above 1600 meters, there will be level 3 avalanche danger!! On Sunday, due to lower temperatures, the avalanche danger will decrease to level 2.

In the past few days, around 1500 meters, up to 30 cm of dry snow has fallen. Due to low temperatures, the snow has settled slowly and transformed even more slowly. Since the snow was dry, the wind has also transported and deposited it in leeward positions. In the high mountains, on sun-exposed sides or slopes, there is a critical layer between the old and new snow cover. On these parts, it has bonded very poorly. In narrow gullies, there is wind-packed snow that is not stable. Wide slopes in shaded positions are wind-scoured to the old snow base, sometimes even to bare ground. Summits and ridges are partially icy, partially wind-scoured to hard base. On shaded slopes of the high mountains or below ridges, there are locally larger areas of deposited/wind-packed snow, which will become unstable on Saturday due to solar radiation.

Today, low clouds will persist in the Tržič hills. At 1500 meters, it will be around -1°C midday, with NE wind up to 20 km/h. At 2000 meters, around -4°C, NE wind slightly stronger. Light snow showers possible in the morning. It will clear up overnight into Saturday. Tomorrow, Saturday, clear and nice weather. Air temperature at 1500 meters around +3°C, at 2000 meters around -2°C. Weak S wind. Sunday cloudy. Cooling. Some new precipitation possible in the afternoon. Snow line around 1200 meters.

Today, snow and avalanche conditions will remain almost unchanged. Snow that falls this morning will not change avalanche conditions. The snowpack will start to transform and settle faster in the next two days.
Tomorrow, Saturday, it will warm up. Solar radiation will strongly affect the snow cover on sun-exposed slopes above 1500 meters. Wet bonded snow slab avalanches, sometimes full-depth or glide avalanches, are expected to release spontaneously. On these parts, the avalanche danger will be CONSIDERABLE, level 3. Do not linger below these slopes or cross them! On shaded sides of the high mountains, snow will remain mostly dry. Due to snowmelt on ridges, they will refreeze overnight into Sunday. Elsewhere, where the snow surface is wet, it will refreeze. In the snowpack on northern slopes of the high mountains, there are weak or critical layers formed during the last precipitations. Wind-packed snow in narrow gullies and leeward positions.
On sun-exposed slopes and in mid-mountains, surface snow will refreeze and a crust will form. The snowpack below 1300 meters is mostly stable.
On Sunday afternoon, light snow will start. On parts, especially sun-exposed sides of mid-mountains and high mountains, snow will fall on a refrozen surface where it will bond poorly to the base.
