Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 4.4.2022

Avalanche bulletin 56, Monday 4.4.2022 at 8:30 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.


General avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area above 1300 meters is 2nd degree on the five-level European scale, above 1700 meters it is 3rd degree avalanche danger.

In the last three days, approximately 40 cm of new snow fell at 1500 meters elevation. Initially wet snow fell, later dry snow. In the mid-mountains, the new snow bonded better with the old snow surface. In the high mountains, dry snow fell and bonded poorly. Wind was blowing, which yesterday changed direction and blew from the north. In the high mountains, it built wind crusts and slabs. Some wind-blown snow is on the south sides of ridges. Also on leeward sides, especially in narrow couloirs, the snow is wind-blown and loose. Air temperatures were below freezing all the time, so the snow is transforming slowly. Last night the wind changed direction again and is blowing from S to SW up to 20 km/h at 1700 meters elevation.

Today in the mountains above Tržič it will be cloudy and foggy. During the day there will be light snowfall. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -5°C, SW wind up to 15 km/h. At 2000 meters around -8°C, SW wind up to 20 km/h. Late afternoon today it will partly clear, tomorrow partly sunny. Warmer.

In the high mountains, conditions today and tomorrow will be unpredictable. There are many areas with wind-blown snow. Especially dangerous are narrow couloirs and parts below ridges, where with a small additional load you can trigger a slab avalanche. Snow transformation and settling will stall somewhat today due to low air and snow temperatures. Tomorrow there will be more sun, so solar radiation will affect sun-exposed aspects. On these parts, the snow cover will soften and load. We do not rule out some spontaneous avalanche from sunny slopes, so avoid walking under slopes with frequent avalanches. On shady aspects, conditions will not change significantly.
Today avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area above 1700 meters will be 3rd degree, lower 2nd degree. General avalanche danger will slowly decrease.
The next local avalanche bulletin will be issued on Wednesday, 6.4.2022 in the morning.
