Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 5.1.2023

General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is level 1 on the five-level European scale.

The snowpack has been settling and melting in the mid-mountains in recent days. Below 1200 meters, there is still very little snow. In the high mountains, a crust formed overnight, underneath it wet snow. The thin crust was present in sheltered spots even during the day. On sun-exposed slopes, smaller to medium wet cohesive snow avalanches or ground avalanches occurred spontaneously. Some cornices also collapsed.

Today will be cloudy in the high mountains. Air temperature at 1500 meters around 7°C, light W to NW wind blowing. At 2000 meters around 3°C, westerly wind up to 30 km/h. Tomorrow morning partly clear. Slightly cooler. Daytime air temperature at 2000 meters just above freezing.

The snowpack will continue to settle. Higher in the high mountains, this process will be slower than in the mid-mountains. Avalanche conditions will not change much until Sunday. Overnight, snow will surface freeze and a crust will form. Where there is less snow, the surface will be icy and there will be a risk of slipping. During the day, snow in the mid-mountains will soften and become very wet. On ridges there are cornices that may collapse during the day. On northern slopes, weak layers are still present in the snowpack.
