General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1000 m a.s.l. is 3rd degree on the five-level European scale! Above 1800 meters locally 4th degree!
Yesterday during the day and last night approximately 50 cm of dry snow fell at 1700 meters. At the start of snowfall, the old snow surface was wet or crusted up to about 1800 meters. Up to this elevation, the new snow has bonded somewhat better with the old snow surface. Snowfall was accompanied by strengthened northerly wind, which transported snow and built wind slabs, drifts, and pillows. Quite large areas with wind-packed snow have formed. Here the snowpack is very unstable. Elsewhere, the wind may have scoured snow to the ground. Above about 1900 meters, snowfall started already yesterday morning. According to precipitation amounts from weather models for the top of Stol and Begunjščica, there may be up to 80 cm of snow at 2000 meters. Before snowfall, the base was hard and icy. Here it is VERY POORLY bonded to the old snow surface and a critical layer has formed! The wind also built avalanche problems! There is a lot of wind-packed, deposited snow in gullies, under northern faces, and especially due to wind direction on southern sides of peaks. Ridges are scoured to ground or to old icy surface in places.
During snowfall, the snow has also settled slowly. However, snow transformation is slowed due to low temperatures.
Today in the morning in Tržič mountains it will be cloudy, in the afternoon clearing. Cold. Air temperature at 1500 meters around -6°C, wind from S to NE direction up to 30 km/h. At 2000 meters air temperature during the day around -10°C, northerly wind up to 40 km/h. Wind will calm somewhat in the late afternoon. Tomorrow clear and very cold.
The snow that fell yesterday and last night is dry. In the high mountains, above 1800 meters, there is a lot of snow. Due to low temperatures and gradually lower air humidity, it will transform and settle very slowly. Strengthened northerly wind blowing today will still transport snow and build new pillows. Here the snowpack will also remain very unstable in the future and with minor additional load, a slab avalanche can be triggered. There are many such areas, so be extremely cautious! Spontaneous avalanching is also expected, so do not stay in areas where snow avalanches are frequent.
Lower, below 1500 meters, there is about 40 cm of new snow. Caution is also needed here, especially on slopes with incline over 30°.

In the coming days, we advise against visiting the mountains, as conditions will be really demanding and dangerous!! General avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič will also remain 3rd degree on the five-level European scale in the coming days!!!
