Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 6.2.2023
6.02.2023
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above the tree line is CONSIDERABLE, level 3, below the tree line level 1 on the five-level European scale.
The strong NE wind that blew on Saturday transported dry snow and built wind slabs and pillows. From sufficiently steep walls, small snow avalanches or sloughs released spontaneously. Ridges are wind-scoured to the hard snow base and icy. Above about 1700 meters, the wind deposited snow in narrow gullies and bowls. Slopes are scoured to the rocky base in places. Below the tree line, the snowpack is mostly stable. Conditions for ski touring are good.
On Friday, especially on sun-exposed slopes, basal avalanches released spontaneously due to solar radiation. On Saturday, the air cooled and the snow stabilized. Locally, the snowpack remained cracked. This will remain for some time, as temperatures will remain low during the week ahead, and solar radiation will not strongly affect the snow.
Today, air temperature at 1500 meters around midday will be about -8°C, with S to NE wind up to 20 km/h. At 2000 meters, about -12°C, with NE wind up to 40 km/h. Mostly clear weather from tomorrow to Thursday. Temperatures will be similar until Thursday.
In the high mountains, on shaded sides, especially in narrow gullies, the snow will remain light and unprocessed. On these parts, you can trigger an avalanche with additional load. The strong northerly wind that blew on Saturday also additionally deposited snow in leeward positions and built new unstable pillow areas. Weak layers are still present in the snowpack. Therefore, locally the avalanche danger is considerable, level 3. Certain slopes are scoured to the hard snow base. Conditions vary greatly. Sun-exposed high mountain positions are frozen. On these parts, there is a high risk of slipping. The wind that will blow will transport snow in smaller quantities.
In the mid-mountains or below the tree line, the snowpack will be mostly stable. Sun-exposed positions will remain surface-frozen due to low temperatures and low humidity. On certain southern slopes, there are cracks that may give way during the day. We advise against walking below such slopes in the mid-mountains and high mountains!!
