The general avalanche risk in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is level 1, above 1400 m it will rise to level 2 late afternoon today according to the five-level European scale. Above 1700 m it will be level 3 from Monday morning onwards.
The snowpack has been mostly stable from Thursday until today. It froze overnight. On sun-exposed slopes, small wet cohesive snow avalanches occurred during the day. Air temperature has dropped in the last two days. The snow surface remained mostly frozen during the day even in the high mountains. Precipitation will reach us this afternoon. The snow line will be around 1400 m.

Today, at the start of precipitation, S to SW wind with gusts up to 70 km/h will blow, transporting snow and building wind slabs, pillows, and cornices. On Monday midday, the wind will shift and blow from the north with gusts up to 80 km/h. The atmosphere will cool rapidly. The wind will deposit snow under ridges on northern sides and form soft pillows on southern slopes. On all aspects, you could trigger an avalanche with minimal additional load on the snowpack!!
In the high mountains, from Monday morning onwards above 1700 m, level 3 avalanche danger!!! The snowpack will be generally very unstable due to wind and snow amount. Many pillows and wind slabs! Up to 30-50 cm of snow can fall in the Karawanks high mountains by Tuesday. Less snow in the mid mountains. We advise against visiting the high mountains in the coming days!
