Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 9.12.2022

General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1700 m is 3rd degree on the five-level European scale, lower it is 2nd degree.

Old snow will become heavily soaked today up to an altitude of about 1700 m. Higher in the high mountains, it snowed during the day. Above 1700 m, SW wind gusting up to 70 km/h transported snow and built wind slabs and pillows. There is a lot of wind-blown snow in valleys and narrow gullies. The snow line will start descending in the evening. Today and tonight into Saturday, up to about 70 cm of snow will fall above 1900 m. Currently, there is 60 cm of snow at around 1500 m.
In the past week, wet snow avalanches have already released from several slopes, even ground avalanches in places.

Today until late evening, the snow line will be around 1700 m, overnight it will slowly descend. Tomorrow morning, no precipitation is expected. It will start snowing again Saturday afternoon. It will cool down. From tomorrow to Sunday, up to about 20 cm of snow will fall. North wind will blow and create further avalanche problems.

The snowpack in the high mountains will remain dry and very unstable, so even a small additional load can trigger a slab avalanche. There is a huge amount of wind-blown snow in gullies and valleys. Tonight, as the snow line descends, new snow below 1700 m will bond somewhat better with the wet snow surface. On sufficiently steep slopes, spontaneous avalanching can be expected.
Strong north wind will also transport snow and build wind slabs and pillows on Sunday during the day. It will cool down, so snow metamorphism will slow down.
