Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 9.2.2023

10.02.2023
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1700 meters is MODERATE 2nd degree, below 1700 meters 1st degree according to the five-level European scale.

Moderate NE wind in the high mountains, which has been blowing in recent days, has deposited snow in small quantities on leeward slopes (SE, S, SW slopes). Since air temperatures were low and solar radiation did not significantly affect the snow surface, the snow remained light and unprocessed. Wind slab areas have formed on these parts. Ridges of the high mountains are wind-scoured to hard snow base. Slopes facing south are partially icy. Even on shady sides, snow is scoured to hard base. Some wind-blown snow is also in narrow gullies of northern slopes. Here the snow is still unprocessed and very poorly bonded to the old snow surface. Weak layers are present between the old snow cover and the wind-blown snow. Wide slopes are mostly stable, some scoured to rocky base.
In the mid-mountains, the snow cover is stable. Slopes are scoured to hard base. On sunny slopes with grassy base, there are remnants where the snow cover is cracked. With higher temperatures and higher air humidity at the end of the week, they will become very unstable and unpredictable!

Today, air temperature at 1500 meters at midday will be around -8°C, weak S to NW wind will blow. At 2000 meters around -10°C, W wind up to 20 km/h. Today it will be partly cloudy in the morning but clouds will break up quickly. Tomorrow it will be clear and warmer. Air temperature at 1500 meters around -3°C, at 2000 meters around -4°C. On Saturday more cloudiness and even warmer. Zero isotherm height at around 2000 meters. Avalanche danger will slightly increase.

In the high mountains today and tomorrow snow and avalanche conditions will remain almost unchanged. Ridges are scoured to hard base so there is slipping hazard on these parts. In some narrow gullies of northern slopes there is still light wind-blown snow, weak layers between old and wind-blown snow cover. On these parts you can trigger a wind slab avalanche with additional stress. Be very careful in the transition from hard snow base to light snow! Wide northern slopes will mostly remain stable and hard. Very few icy areas. Use equipment suitable for such conditions!
Also in the mid-mountains the snow surface is mostly hard and snow cover stable. There are certain areas with wind-blown snow that are unstable, but these areas are few. Be careful!
At the end of the week the air will warm up, so daytime avalanche danger will slightly increase.
