Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 9.3.2023

General avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area above 1800 meters is CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree on the five-level European scale. Below 1800 meters it is 1st degree.

In recent days there have been some precipitations. In the high mountains and also in the mid-mountains above 1200 meters, dry snow fell, which the wind transported and formed new slab areas. There are more of these in the high mountains on northern slopes. Mostly, the snowpack is well consolidated and stable.

Today it will warm up in the Tržič mountains. The zero isotherm will be above 2200 meters. Air temperature at 1500 meters at midday will be around +3°C, at 2000 meters around +1°C. The air will be humid. In the high mountains, a strong SW wind will blow with gusts up to 90 km/h, bringing humid air. In the morning there will also be some precipitation. Tomorrow, Friday, it will be cloudy with precipitations. It will be somewhat warmer. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around +7°C, at 2000 meters around +2°C. The wind will calm down somewhat.

In tonight's night, the night to Thursday, the atmosphere started to warm up and humid air began to arrive, both of which will strongly affect the snowpack. Snow is already moist up to 1600 meters. Today it will gradually warm up and the zero isotherm height will be above 2200 meters. The snow that fell in the last days will strongly melt up to that height. Above 1800 meters, where there is more snow, wet persistent snow avalanches will release spontaneously. We do not rule out the release of glide avalanches in the mid-mountains at places with grassy base and sufficient steepness. Snow will settle and melt in the mid-mountains and also in the high mountains.
Tomorrow the avalanche and snow conditions will be similar. It will be somewhat warmer and the avalanche danger above around 1800 meters will also be CONSIDERABLE tomorrow, but it will gradually decrease.
Do not stay under slopes where snow avalanches are frequent. There will also be danger of rockfall from walls. Lower in the mid-mountains there is less snow. In the night to Saturday the air will start cooling, therefore the avalanche danger will be lower.
