Snow conditions in the area of the Tržič municipality 13.3.2023

13.03.2023
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Tržič Municipality is 1st degree on the five-level European scale. Above 1600 meters, it will be 2nd degree from Monday afternoon onwards.

On Saturday and Sunday, the snow surface froze during the night. Larger areas of icy surfaces formed up to the highest peaks and ridges. Solar radiation softened the snow cover during the day on sun-exposed slopes. Snow melted and settled on these parts. In the high mountains, sliding or ground avalanches released spontaneously, and in some places from the Košuta ridge also larger ones that reached their maximum extents. On shaded slopes, the snow remained frozen even during the day.
The old snowpack on shaded slopes is mostly stable. Lower in the mid-mountains, below 1250 meters, there is very little snow and it is frozen. On sun-exposed slopes, however, it melted quickly in sunny weather and fairly high temperatures.

Today in the Tržič hills it will be partly cloudy. There will also be some sun in the morning. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around +5°C, at 2000 meters around +2°C. In the morning, a westerly wind will blow, in the afternoon a strengthened SW wind that will bring moist air. It will become cloudier. The zero isotherm height will be above 3000 meters. The snow surface will be watery. On Tuesday it will be cloudy with precipitation. Initially, it will rain up to about 2000 meters. In the afternoon, the snow line will start to descend. On Tuesday night to Wednesday, a northerly wind will start blowing. By Wednesday morning, some snow may fall in the high mountains, accompanied by a wind from northerly directions. New snow will also fall in the mid-mountains, above about 1000 meters, but there will be little snow.

Today in the morning, snow and avalanche conditions will remain almost unchanged. In the afternoon, the snowpack, especially on southern slopes, will become increasingly moist due to the influx of high air humidity. It will also soften on shaded slopes, mainly up to about 1900 meters. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, it will initially rain up to 2000 meters and the snow surface will be wet. The snow line will start descending in the afternoon and it will start snowing. Snow will fall on the moist snow surface and bond relatively well. On Tuesday night to Wednesday, a northerly wind will start blowing, the snow line will start descending. The northerly wind will mainly above 1700 meters transport snow and deposit it on leeward slopes, where it will build new slab areas and drifts. On these parts, there will be a danger that you will trigger an avalanche with your weight! We expect up to 15 cm of new snow above 1700 meters. There will be less new snow in the mid-mountains. Snowfall will stop by Wednesday morning.
From this afternoon, the avalanche danger above 1600 meters will be 2nd degree. Locally, the avalanche danger from tomorrow, Tuesday onwards, above 1800 meters may be higher. We advise against visiting the high mountains tomorrow and on Wednesday.
