Snow conditions in the area of Tržič municipality 11.3.2023

The general avalanche danger in the area of Tržič Municipality is level 1 on the five-level European scale. Locally above 2000 meters, it is level 2.

Over two days, the snowpack up to 2000 meters has become heavily wet or water-saturated. Higher up, where there was fog, the snow was locally still partially dry. Smaller to medium-sized wet cohesive snow avalanches released spontaneously. On sun-exposed slopes, gliding or surface avalanches were also frequent. Walking under such slopes was unpredictable. The snowpack melted and settled more in the mid-mountains or at lower elevations.

Tomorrow, Saturday, it will be cloudy in the Tržič mountains. There will be somewhat more clearing in the morning. Temperature at 1500 meters will be around +1°C midday, at 2000 meters around -3°C. In the high mountains, a light NW to S wind will blow. On Sunday, it will be nice weather. It will cool even more overnight into Sunday. The snowpack will refreeze. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -2°C midday, at 2000 meters around -5°C. A W to NW wind with gusts up to 30 km/h will blow.

Overnight into Saturday, the atmosphere will start cooling. The snowpack is gradually becoming more stable. Snow above 1200 meters will refreeze and a crust will form. In the high mountains above 1900 meters, there are still weak layers in the snowpack. By Sunday, icy surfaces will increase significantly. Almost all slopes will be icy. Use equipment suitable for such conditions. The avalanche danger has decreased and will be low below 2000 meters until Monday, level 1 on the five-level European scale.
