Snow conditions in the area of Tržič Municipality 13.4.2023

13.04.2023
General avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area will be CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree on the five-degree European scale. Below 1400 meters, it will be MODERATE, 2nd degree.

The snowpack has softened on the surface in the mid-mountains during the last two days. New snow has also settled and on lower elevations and sun-exposed slopes has melted. Small wet loose snow avalanches have released spontaneously. The snow has frozen more on the surface overnight and a crust has formed. In the high mountains, above 1800 meters, there are still wind-packed areas in narrow couloirs and below ridges. On these parts, the snow is unprocessed and unstable. Under the new snow or wind-packed snow, there is a thicker hard layer of ice or snow that cannot be penetrated by human weight. There are more such areas on the northern, shady sides of the high mountains.

Tonight into Thursday, precipitation will reach us. Tomorrow, Thursday, it will snow. The snow line will drop quickly overnight and will be around 1000 meters by late morning. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -1°C midday, at 2000 meters around -3°C. In the high mountains, S to NE wind up to 40 km/h. We expect up to 50 cm of snow at 1500 meters by tomorrow evening, and possibly a bit more above 1700 meters in the high mountains.

Tonight into Thursday, precipitation will hit us. Initially heavy snow in the high mountains and the snow line will drop quickly. Snow will fall on hard base in places. The wind accompanying the snowfall will transport snow to all slopes, regardless of aspect. More wind-packed snow in narrow couloirs, below north faces and on south slopes below ridges. The snowpack will be very unstable in mid-mountains and high mountains. On sufficiently steep slopes (over 30°) we can trigger dry loose snow avalanches already with minimal additional load. From very steep slopes (>50°) we expect spontaneous releases of dry loose snow avalanches due to larger snow amounts, so walking under slopes with frequent avalanches will be dangerous. Wind will also form wind slabs and build cornices on certain ridges.
In the coming days until Sunday, we advise against visiting mid-mountains and high mountains.
Avalanche danger will thus be CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree above 1300 meters, 2nd degree below 1300 meters. Tomorrow, Thursday, we will also update this local avalanche bulletin during the day.
