Snow conditions in the area of Tržič Municipality 26.4.2023

26.04.2023
The general avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area above 1600 meters is MODERATE, level 2 on the five-level European scale. Below 1600 meters it will be LOW, level 1.

In the past two days, up to 10 cm of snow fell in the high mountains above around 1800 meters. Snowfall was accompanied by winds from northern directions, which transported snow into leeward positions and built new unstable areas. Wind-blown snow is also under ridges on north-facing slopes and in narrow gullies. Below approximately 1800 meters, the snow was increasingly wet with decreasing elevation. Below 1400 meters, it rained. The snow cover is melting rapidly at lower elevations. Below 1300 meters, there is very little or no snow left.
In the high mountains, individual small dry loose snow avalanches released from sufficiently steep slopes. In the mid-mountains, individual small to medium-sized wet snow avalanches on all aspects.

Tomorrow, on Wednesday, morning temperatures will be below freezing point. The snow cover will surface freeze. Midday air temperature at 1500 meters will be around +4°C, at 2000 meters around 0°C. In the high mountains, W to NW wind up to 25 km/h. On Thursday, more cloudiness. During the day, some precipitation expected. The zero isotherm will be around 2000 meters midday. Air temperature at 1500 meters around +3°C.

The snow cover will surface freeze overnight into Wednesday above 1400 meters. In the high mountains above 1800 meters, there are still areas with wind-blown dry snow. On these parts, the snowpack is unstable and one person can trigger a snow avalanche. Wind-blown snow persists under ridges on northern sides.
Tomorrow afternoon, the zero isotherm will be around 2000 meters. Up to that elevation, the snow will gradually wetten and become heavy. Individual wet snow avalanches expected on all aspects. On sun-exposed slopes, the sun will also affect the snow, so avalanches will release there too. Overnight into Thursday, the snow cover will be somewhat more stable due to lower temperatures, but during the morning the air will start warming and the zero isotherm elevation will rise quickly. On Thursday evening already above 2200 meters.
Avalanche conditions in the mountains above Tržič will remain unpredictable due to spontaneous snow avalanche releases. If heading into the hills, return to the starting point early in the morning. Snow avalanches can reach lower elevations, even where there is currently no snow. Be careful! Due to snowmelt, small landslides or individual rockfalls are not excluded.
Avalanche danger will be level 2 above 1600 meters, level 1 below 1600 meters. Locally, the danger may be higher during the day!
