Snow conditions in the area of Tržič municipality 31.12.2021

Avalanche bulletin 16, Friday 31.12.2021 at 10:30 for the area of Tržič Municipality.

General avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area above 1200 metres is level 2, below 1200 metres level 1.

During the day, over the past two days, the snow cover has become wet and softened, especially on sun-exposed slopes. From certain steep grassy slopes, ground or slab avalanches have released. On shaded high-altitude areas, the snow has mostly remained dry. In narrow gullies, there is still quite a bit of wind-blown snow. Wind slabs have formed here.

Today in the Tržič mountains it will be clear and very warm for the season. Air temperature at 1500 metres will be around +11°C, with light NW wind. At 2000 metres around 10°C, with NW wind up to 20 km/h. Tomorrow will also be warm with somewhat increased cloudiness. Zero isotherm height will be around 3400 m a.s.l. On Sunday clear with slightly lower temperatures, but still very warm.

Sun-exposed slopes:
Due to strong solar radiation, the snow cover on sun-exposed slopes will be wet. Snow density will increase, strongly affecting snowpack stability. There are many visible cracks on grassy slopes. We expect spontaneous release of ground avalanches, especially where the base is grassy or leafy. Walking under these slopes will be dangerous. The service road to Dom na Zelenici is CLOSED from the former middle station to Dom na Zelenici IN FULL, due to very unstable snow cover and cracks above the road in the upper part of the path.
Shaded areas:
In the high mountains, the snow will be slightly more moist on the surface, but not wet. Moisture will slowly penetrate the snowpack due to low relative humidity. Overnight, the snowpack will firm up somewhat. A crust will form in places.
