Snow conditions in the area of Tržič Municipality 31.3.2022

Avalanche Bulletin 54, Thursday 31.3.2022 at 5:30 AM for the area of Tržič Municipality.

General avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area above 1300 meters is level 2 on the five-level European scale, above 1800 meters it is level 3.

The snow cover is mostly wind-packed. Snow is currently falling above 1500 meters elevation. In the high mountains, it started snowing overnight, so there is somewhat more snow. The snow bonds relatively well with the old snow surface except where the wind blows. In the high mountains, a west wind up to 30 km/h is currently blowing, transporting snow and building wind slabs and cornices.

Today it will be cloudy with precipitation. The snow line will be around 1000 meters, occasionally lower. At 1500 meters, approximately 25 cm of snow will fall by tomorrow morning, higher in the high mountains somewhat more. Air temperature at 2000 meters will be around -2°C, with SW wind up to 30 km/h. Tomorrow will also be cloudy with precipitation.

In the high mountains, up to 35 cm of snow can fall by tomorrow morning. New snow fell on variously aged base. Somewhere the old snow surface was frozen, elsewhere wind-packed. Dry snow avalanches can release spontaneously from sufficiently steep slopes. Under ridges on sun-exposed sides, where there is grassy base, spontaneous slab avalanches can occur. In the high mountains, SW wind also blows, transporting snow and building wind slabs and cornices. Avalanche danger above 1800 meters is level 3.
In the mid-mountains, there will be somewhat less snow. On these parts, new snow will fall on bare, softened or wind-packed base and will mostly bond well. The most dangerous will be sufficiently steep grassy slopes where there was no more snow. On these parts, we expect individual small slab avalanches.
