Snow conditions in the area of Tržič Municipality 6.3.2023

6.03.2023
General avalanche danger in the area of Tržič Municipality is level 2 on the five-level European scale. Below 1700 m it is level 1.

Relatively high temperatures on Saturday and solar radiation strongly affected the snowpack, especially on sun-exposed slopes. On these areas, individual small to medium sliding or slab avalanches and wet cohesive snow avalanches released. On shaded slopes above 1700 m, snow was still dry and light. The snowpack on slopes above 1700 m facing NW, N and NE still contains weak layers. Least favorable are entries into gullies and couloirs, where there are still areas with wind-packed snow.
The snow surface froze overnight to Sunday and a crust formed. Ridges, summits and some sun-exposed slopes are icy.
Snowfalls were not abundant and did not additionally affect snow and avalanche conditions.

This afternoon cloudy and foggy. Air temperature at 1500 m around -2°C, at 2000 m around -5°C. In high mountains SW wind with gusts to 50 km/h. Tomorrow, Tuesday, similar weather. Occasional snow during the day. In high mountains SW wind with gusts to 60 km/h. Zero isotherm height around 1200 m. No major snowfall expected. On Wednesday wind slightly stronger.

Tomorrow cloudy with some precipitation. Expect up to 10 cm snow above 1500 m in high mountains, less at lower elevations. New snow will fall onto frozen snow surface in high mountains, especially on sun-exposed aspects. On these it will be poorly bonded. Snowfall accompanied by SW wind transporting snow and building wind slabs on leeward aspects. Also building small cornices. Ridges and certain slopes will be wind-scoured to old snow surface. Above 1700 m weak layers still present in snowpack on northern slopes. More caution needed entering couloirs and gullies on NW, N and NE aspects, where snow is still dry and new snow will increase avalanche danger.
Lower in mid-mountains snow will fall on wet surface and be well bonded. Due to SW wind and high air humidity, snow below 1200 m will be wet.
