Snow conditions in the area of Tržič Municipality 9.12.2021
9.12.2021
Avalanche Bulletin 6, Thursday 9.12.2021 at 7:00 for the area of Tržič Municipality.
General avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area is level 3 on the five-level European scale. Locally level 4 above 1700 meters.
In the past days, north to north-east wind up to 30 km/h blew above 1700 meters. The wind deposited snow in leeward positions and built wind slabs, drifts and cornices. At certain locations, snow was scoured to the hard base, elsewhere the wind deposited snow onto that hard base. Solar radiation affected the snow surface, but only below 1200 meters. Below 1200 meters, the snow has transformed and bonded somewhat better. Higher up, due to low air temperatures, transformation is slower.
Overnight, about 30 cm of new snow fell above 1500 meters. Snowfall was accompanied by SW wind up to 30 km/h, with gusts up to 50 km/h. Today during the morning, the wind will change direction and north wind up to 30 km/h will begin blowing. Air temperature will be around -5°C. During the day it will continue snowing, but not as heavily as overnight to Thursday. Another 10 cm of snow may fall. At 2000 meters, air temperature will be -7°C, with north to north-east wind up to 40 km/h blowing.
Before snowfall, wind was transporting "old" snow and building drifts, wind slabs and cornices. At certain parts, the wind scoured snow to the hard base. Snow that started falling yesterday evening deposited in places onto that hard surface and is very poorly bonded, elsewhere onto already built wind slabs. Snowfall was accompanied by SW direction wind with gusts up to 45 km/h. The wind transported new snow and built new avalanche problems. Due to the wind changing direction, snow was deposited on all slopes, especially in Zelenice valley. There is a huge amount of wind-blown snow under ridges and in gullies. From sufficiently steep slopes, spontaneous sloughing of dry poorly bonded snow can be expected. Lingering under steep slopes can be dangerous. Recognizing current avalanche problems requires additional experience. Today and tomorrow we advise against visiting the mountains.
