Avalanche Bulletin 34, Wednesday 9.2.2022 at 8:30 for the area of Tržič Municipality.
The general avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area is level 1 on the five-level European scale. Locally above 1800 m, level 2 avalanche danger.
The new snow that fell on Sunday night was transported by the wind into leeward positions over the last two days. This snow has not bonded with the old snow surface, which is icy or hard. Wind slabs are present in narrow gullies and locally on slopes. Some smaller areas with wind-drifted snow are also on the southern sides of ridges. Elsewhere, the wind has blown the new snow down to bare or icy and hard ground. Ridges are still icy. Yesterday afternoon, when the wind calmed down, the snow surface softened slightly on sun-exposed aspects. Overnight, a crust formed or the snow froze. On shade-exposed aspects, the snow remained dry.
Today and tomorrow it will be clear in the Tržič mountains. Slightly more cloudiness tomorrow in the afternoon. Today's temperature at 1500 m will be around +6°C, with a light SW wind blowing. At 2000 m today around +4°C, with a W wind up to 20 km/h. Tomorrow similar weather with slightly lower temperatures. On Thursday evening it will become cloudy.
In the high mountains, today and tomorrow the snow will soften due to slightly higher daytime air temperatures, especially on sun-exposed aspects. Overnight it will freeze and a crust will form. The air temperature will have a slightly smaller impact on shade-exposed aspects in the high mountains, where the snow will mostly remain dry. Light wind will not transport snow.
In the mid-mountains, the snow on sun-exposed aspects will wet, then freeze overnight. Here, solar radiation will have a greater impact on the snow surface. In parts of the mid-mountains, the new snow will transform faster and bond with the old snow surface.
In the high mountains, especially in narrow gullies, there is wind-drifted snow. In these areas, with significant additional load, you can trigger wind slab avalanches.
Ridges are wind-scoured and icy. Be careful not to slip!!! Especially be cautious in the early morning and afternoon when the surface is frozen and will freeze. Watch out for crusts, as snow on sun-exposed aspects in the high and mid-mountains will grab crampons!!!
