Snow conditions in the mountains 12.12.2011

12.12.2011
Until today, the weather has mostly been dry. Despite the relatively warm and humid southwesterly wind, the snow cover situation in the high mountains has not changed much. The snowline was at an altitude of around 2100 m and fluctuated only slightly from day to day. Small precipitation began to appear tonight.

In the Julian Alps, at 2500 m there is around 60 cm of snow, but the consolidated old snow cover is mostly only on plateaus and in shady slopes, on sunny slopes there is little of it. Notable snow cover is only in the high mountains, above 2000 m. Avalanche danger is low, 1st degree. Locally, due to hard snow, there is a risk of slipping.

Until tomorrow morning, there will be cloudy weather in the mountains, precipitation will intensify and spread eastward. The snow level will be at around 1400 m above sea level, dropping to around 800 m on Tuesday night. Until tomorrow morning, 15 to 30 cm of snow may fall in the Julian Alps and western Karawanks, and 10 to 20 cm in the eastern part of our mountains. The possibility of slab formation will slightly increase in the high mountains where snow will fall on the old base, elsewhere not. On Tuesday it will be dry, a southwesterly wind will blow, transporting new snow into drifts.

The new report will be issued on Wednesday, December 14, 2011.

General avalanche danger is 1st degree on the European five-level scale.
