Snow conditions in the mountains 12.12.2016
13.12.2016
General danger level - Monday, 12.12.2016
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is level 1, LOW. The snowpack is stable and mostly hard and partially icy. Therefore, there is a high risk of slipping.
Snow conditions
There is little snow in the mountains, mostly only above around 2300 m, only in the Julian Alps and partially in gullies it reaches lower. Due to cooling, the snow is mostly frozen, partially icy. The snow cover, where present, is stable. In the past days, it softened on sun-exposed slopes during the day and froze at night, the crust strengthened.
Expected weather development
Dry weather will continue. It has cooled and the freezing level will oscillate around 1500 m. Some days it will warm above 0°C up to 2000 m altitude, but only temporarily.
Tendency of snow conditions
Until Friday, the snow will remain mostly frozen and hard, only some days it may soften slightly on southern aspects during the day. The snowpack will remain stable and partially icy, avalanche danger LOW. There will still be a risk of slipping due to the hard and partially icy snowpack, and on wind-packed ridges.
