Snow conditions in the mountains 13.4.2011
13.04.2011
It has cooled down in the mountains. In the high mountains, 5 to 10 cm of new snow has fallen.
In the Julian Alps at 2500 m there is around 310 cm of snow, at 1500 m around 40 cm. The most snow is in the western Julian Alps. Elsewhere in our mountains at 1500 m snow is only in the gullies.
Prisojna slopes are bare up to around 2000 m. The snow cover under the new snow is currently well transformed and mostly refrozen.
Avalanche danger is mostly level 1, in places on slopes with new wind-packed snow level 2. An avalanche can be triggered by significant additional loading of the snowpack especially on steeper slopes and at sites with wind-packed snow. The surface is mostly hard and icy in places.
Partly clear and mostly dry weather will continue through the end of the week. The snow line will be at around 1500 m elevation. New snow will transform only slowly. Avalanche conditions will not change much.
The next report will be issued on Friday, April 15, 2011.
General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
