Snow conditions in the mountains 13.4.2017

13.04.2017
General avalanche danger level - Thursday, 13. 4. 2017

Danger level is 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.

Main problem: favorable conditions, new snow

Danger pattern: Spring situation

Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after cold

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is LOW, level 1. The snowpack is mostly stable, there is little snow in the mountains.

Snow conditions

Snow is mostly well transformed. The snowpack is frozen and hard in the morning. During the day it softens especially on sun-exposed slopes, lower down also in shade. The snowpack depth is uneven, there is little snow in the mountains and it melts quickly. The possibility of triggering an avalanche is low.

Forecast weather development

Today initially moderately to mostly cloudy, partially clearing during the day. In the afternoon isolated short-lived showers will form. Tomorrow morning and forenoon mostly cloudy, afternoon mostly sunny. Local showers will form, continuing into the night to Saturday. Snow level between 2000 and 2100 m above sea level. Saturday cloudy with precipitation, which will subside from the north in the evening. Snow level will drop to around 1800 m above sea level. Up to 20 cm of snow possible. Sunday variable to mostly cloudy, occasional smaller local precipitation. Monday dry and partly sunny weather.

Trend in snow conditions

The snowpack is relatively stable. On Saturday it will snow on a relatively hard base, so the new snow will bond poorly with it. In places where at least 20 cm of snow falls, the new snow will be potentially fragile. From steep slopes, small new snow slabs or sluffs possible. Also on Sunday the new snow may still be potentially unstable, then it will probably settle enough that the possibility of slab formation decreases.
