Snow conditions in the mountains 14.12.2011
14.12.2011
On Monday and in the night to Tuesday it snowed in the mountains above about 1300 m. In the Julian Alps and partly in the western Karawanks 10 to 15 cm of snow fell, elsewhere much less, towards the east almost nothing. On Tuesday it was dry weather. The snowline was at about 1400 m above sea level. The thin snow cover of new snow remained poorly transformed and soft in the mountains, the southwesterly wind blew it into drifts.
In the Julian Alps at 2500 m there is up to about 70 cm of snow, but the compacted cover of old snow is mostly only above about 1400 m. Elsewhere there is much less snow. The avalanche danger is low, 1st degree. In places in the high mountains there is a risk of slipping on the old, partly icy base.
Today, Wednesday, there will be some sun on Pohorje, elsewhere mostly cloudy and foggy. Minor precipitation will occur in the western part of our mountains and spread to the east in the night to Thursday. The snow line will gradually lower from the initial 1300 m to about 700 m above sea level by tomorrow. On Thursday during the day there will still be occasional precipitation. In the mountains up to 5 to 20 cm of snow can fall by Friday morning, the most in the Julian Alps and western Karawanks.
The avalanche danger will not increase significantly due to the new snow.
The new report will be issued on Friday, December 16, 2011.
The general avalanche danger is 1st degree on the European five-level scale.
