Snow conditions in the mountains 1.5.2013

1.05.2013
In sunny and warm weather the snow cover has settled and melted. Considerable snow has disappeared. At night snow froze only in the high mountains, but in recent days hardly even there anymore.

At 2500 m in the Julian Alps there is up to around 310 cm of snow, at 1500 m up to 130 cm. Elsewhere in our mountains at 1500 m from 10 to 30 cm of snow. More snow in the shady slopes, southern slopes are bare above 1500 m.

The snow cover is mostly softened. The snow is relatively well transformed.

Avalanche danger is mostly level 1. The snow cover is generally stable, but during the day it softens further and avalanche danger increases slightly especially on steep, sunny slopes. There with greater additional load you can trigger a wet snow avalanche. Also on northern slopes there is more snow that has not avalanched yet and can avalanche with additional snow cover load.

Today it will still be quite warm, in the following days it will cool somewhat. Due to more humid air and more cloudiness snow will nevertheless not refreeze at night. Local precipitation will occur, partly showers and isolated thunderstorms. Avalanche conditions will not change much.

New report will be issued on Friday, 3.5.2013 in the afternoon.

General avalanche danger is level 2 on the European five-degree scale.
