Snow conditions in the mountains 16.12.2011

16.12.2011
Yesterday it snowed in the mountains, the snow line dropped to an altitude of around 700 m. 5 to almost 20 cm of snow fell. A strengthened southwest wind blew, creating drifts.

At night it cleared up, today it is clouding over again and in the west smaller precipitations are already appearing, the snow line is between 1100 and 1400 m.

Currently in the Julian Alps at 2500 m around 100 cm of snow, at 1500 m around 10 cm. Similar conditions also elsewhere in our mountains. The snow is soft, wind-exposed locations are blown to the old, partially icy base. Avalanche danger is low, 1st degree. Especially at places where snow is blown, there is a risk of slips on the old, partially icy base.

Until tomorrow morning 15 to around 30 cm of snow will fall in the mountains. Initially a strong, also gusty southwest wind will blow, creating drifts and slabs, at night the wind will turn to north to northwest direction. Tomorrow during the day and on Sunday dry and cold weather. The snow cover will settle only slowly, due to wind numerous drifts and pillows will form. Avalanche danger will increase due to the new snow. Especially dangerous will be places with drifted snow. New report will be issued on Monday, 19 December 2011.

General avalanche danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale.
