16.12.2016
General danger level - Friday, 16.12.2016
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main factor: favourable conditions
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is level 1, LOW. The snow cover is stable and mostly hard and icy in places. Therefore there is a high risk of slipping.
Snow conditions
There is little snow in the mountains, mostly only above around 2300 m, only in the Julian Alps and in some gullies lower. The snow is mostly frozen, icy in places, only on days when it is warmer at altitude does the snow cover soften slightly on sun-exposed slopes. The existing snow cover is stable.
Expected weather development
Dry weather will continue, only on Tuesday or Wednesday there is a small chance of occasional light snowfall with negligible amounts of new snow. Today and initially tomorrow temperature below zero, tomorrow during the day it will warm up at altitude, even warmer on Sunday when the freezing level will be at around 2200 m. On Monday it will cool somewhat, freezing level down to around 1100 m. On Tuesday temperature below zero.
Trend in snow conditions
Snow will remain mostly frozen and hard, only on Saturday and Sunday will it soften slightly on southern aspects during the day. The snow cover will remain stable and partly icy, avalanche danger LOW. There will still be a risk of slipping due to the hard and icy snow cover in places, and on wind-packed ridges.
