Snow conditions in the mountains 20.4.2011

20.04.2011
Sunny weather continues. The snow line is slowly rising. This morning it was at 2100 m above sea level, previous days slightly lower. The snow cover is melting lower down, higher up it softens during the day and freezes at night. In shady spots in the high mountains, the snow has transformed relatively poorly.

In the Julian Alps there is up to about 300 cm of snow at 2500 m, about 40 cm at 1500 m. Elsewhere in our mountains, snow at 1500 m is only in gullies. South-facing slopes are mostly bare even above 2000 m.

The snow cover is mostly well transformed, except in shady high-mountain spots. In the morning and part of the forenoon it is frozen, then softens on the surface during the day.

Avalanche danger is mostly level 1. Snow is stable. In the morning and part of the forenoon the surface is hard and there is risk of slipping.

Until Friday the weather will not change. Sunny and a bit warmer. The snow line will rise a bit more, expected to around 2500 m above sea level. Avalanche conditions will not change much. Only in high-mountain gullies the snow will transform a bit faster again.

Next report will be issued on Friday, April 22, 2011.

General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale.
