Snow conditions in the mountains 2.11.2012

2.11.2012
In the beginning of the week it was still occasionally snowing in the mountains, the snow line gradually rose and today it is at an altitude of about 1400 m. With gradual warming, the snow cover gradually settled and lower down also melted.

By today, 20 to 60 cm of snow remains in the mountains, the most in the high mountains of the Julian Alps. The snow in the high mountains is frozen and covered with a crust that does not bear human weight. Lower down it is mostly soft. Currently, the avalanche danger is low, but it will increase in the coming days due to warming and precipitation, especially in the high mountains where there is more snow. Today it will be cloudy, with occasional precipitation. In the mountains above about 1400 m, up to about 5 cm of snow may fall. On Saturday a strong southwesterly will blow. Some light precipitation will be mainly in the western Julian Alps. The snow line will gradually rise to an altitude of about 2000 m, the freezing level to about 2900 m. On Sunday the precipitation will intensify and the snow line will rise to 2800 m. The snow cover will become soaked and the avalanche danger will increase especially on steep, bare and grassy slopes. There individual avalanches of wet or soaked snow may release spontaneously.

A new report will be issued on Monday, 5.11.2012.

The general avalanche danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale.
