Snow conditions in the mountains 21.12.2016
21.12.2016
General danger level - Wednesday, 21. 12. 2016
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is level 1, LOW. The snowpack is stable and mostly hard and icy in places. Therefore there is a high risk of slips.
Snow conditions
There is little snow in the mountains, mostly only above about 2300 m, only in the Julian Alps and in some gullies it reaches lower. The snow is mostly refrozen, icy in places, only on days when it is warmer at higher elevations does the snowpack soften slightly on sun-exposed slopes. The existing snowpack is stable.
Forecast weather development
Dry weather will continue. The freezing level will rise above the highest peaks today and remain there tomorrow, below about 1200 m above sea level there will be a strong temperature drop and temperatures below zero.
Trend of snow conditions
Snow will remain mostly refrozen and hard, only on southern aspects it may soften slightly during the day. The snowpack will remain stable and partly icy in places, avalanche danger LOW. The risk of slips due to the hard and icy snowpack in places, and on wind-packed ridges, will persist.
