Snow conditions in the mountains 2.1.2017
2.01.2017
General danger level - Monday, 2 January 2017
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is level 1, LOW. The snowpack is stable, hard and icy in places. High risk of slipping.
Snow conditions
Little snow in the mountains, mostly only above about 2300 m. Snow is mostly frozen, icy in places; only on days warmer at altitude does the snowpack soften slightly on sun-exposed slopes.
Forecast weather development
No significant precipitation for quite some time. Today it will gradually cloud over in the west; minor precipitation will mostly occur towards evening and overnight into Tuesday only in southern and partly central Slovenia, while from the Julian Alps to Pohorje it will be mostly or completely dry. Moderate westerly to southwesterly wind. Tomorrow morning clearing. Temporary northerly wind, cooling. Temperature in hills below zero. Similar on Wednesday. Evening and overnight into Thursday warming. Freezing level rising to altitudes between 1000 and 1200 m. Cooling again during the day, so temperature below zero everywhere by evening.
Trend in snow conditions
Snow will remain mostly frozen and hard; only on southern slopes may soften slightly during the day if warmer. Snowpack stable and icy in places, avalanche danger LOW. Risk of slipping remains due to hard and icy snowpack, and on wind-packed ridges. Slipping risk also on grassy slopes, as surface hoar can form overnight, and rime on grass in places on northern aspects.
